Where HT cable actually fails. Cutting the screen for a joint or a termination concentrates electrical stress, and the kit exists to re-shape it. That is why the joint count, and who makes them, matters more than the cable brand.

The Work

HT underground is the connection between the utility supply point and the plant substation, and between substations inside a large site. One circuit typically carries the whole facility, so every metre of it is a single point of failure — and unlike an overhead line, you cannot see where it is hurt.

The work that matters is the jointing. HT terminations and straight-through joints control the electrical stress at the point where the insulation is cut, and a joint made in dust, damp or a hurry will track and fail. We joint in tented, clean conditions, use kits matched to the cable, and record the IR and hi-pot results before the circuit is charged.

Why It Matters

Where This Work
Decides The Outcome

The joint is where HT cable fails

Cable in the ground rarely fails in the middle of a run. It fails at joints and terminations, where the screen is cut and the electrical stress has to be re-shaped by the kit. Who makes the joint matters more than who supplies the cable.

Testing before charging saves the panel

A weak termination discovered by charging it takes the switchgear with it. IR and hi-pot results recorded before energising cost an hour and are the cheapest insurance on the job.

Armour earthing is not optional

The armour is a fault-current path. Bonded properly at the right points it clears a fault; bonded badly it circulates current, heats the cable and de-rates the circuit you just paid to install.

Route measured and drum lengths planned so the circuit carries the fewest possible joints.

Laying

Pulled on rollers within tension and bending-radius limits, bedded, protected and marked.

Jointing & termination

Joints and end terminations made in clean, controlled conditions with kits matched to the cable size and voltage class.

Test & charge

IR, hi-pot and phase sequence recorded, then charged with the utility or the plant electrical head present.
